To my Colleagues and Friends in the College of Surgeons:

Our border community was fractured by tragic violence of a mass casualty shooting in August 2019. I drove out of the mountains and jogged into the trauma bay in jeans and hiking boots. I arrived just in time to direct the triage and surgical care of four simultaneous arrivals all with critical thoracic and abdominal gun-shot wounds. The pinnacle of my career as residency program director was leading my residents and faculty in response to this tragic event. I am grateful to make this contribution to our Texas community.

Everyone we train from students to residents form both our legacy and family. I am honored to serve as your president for the 2020-2022 sessions of the South Texas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. (SoTX-ACS). I am asking all of us to consider our legacy and support the South Texas Chapter Fund.

The purpose of the South Texas Chapter Fund is to provide scholarships for students and residents to attend both the Annual South Texas Chapter meeting and semi-annual advocacy events in Austin. This fund will provide stipends for medical students, residents, and members to attend the ACS Clinical Congress and the Leadership & Advocacy Summit in DC.

The fund is administered by the American College of Surgeons with starting requirements at $500 dollars and a $2,000 balance to grant scholarships.

I am contributing the initial amount and propose three levels of recognized donation: Founders Circle 500, Mentor 200, and Supporter 100. Scholarships are gifted by the executive council. The intent is that recipients become candidate ACS members.

We are starting this initiative in advance of our March meeting to support attendance at our 2020 Advocacy Day in Austin and our 2021 meeting. I will be approaching members to determine our best direction and service to our community. I would like to thank all of you for considering your legacy in education and resident training.

Sincerely,

Brian R. Davis MD, FACS, FASGE
